About HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation

HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation is one of the most experienced Swiss development organisations. It promotes equitable sharing and sustainable use of water resources, enhanced water efficiency and productivity, and access to sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene services to contribute to a water secure world. Promoting the implementation of the human rights to water and sanitation, enhancing sustainability of services, and strengthening the effectiveness of behaviour change interventions are fundamental aspect of its work.

What we do

HELVETAS has been working for more than four decades in the water sector.

HELVETAS focuses on developing long-term partnerships with local actors such as local governments in order to gradually strengthen their capacity to provide sustainable services. HELVETAS works at the following intervention levels: empowered people, strong institutions and enabling policy environment. HELVETAS strategic shifts in the water sector are illustrated here and described below.

A comprehensive consideration of water resources management in the context of increasing risks

Water crises have been rated as the top global risk over the next decade. HELVETAS promotes the use of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) to contribute to equitable and sustainable use of water resources. The Water Use Master Plan approach has been developed in Nepal to operationalise IWRM principles.

Helvetas promotes efficient irrigation technologies and strengthen the institutions responsible for water management. Water harvesting and storage are also important elements to reduce water risks. HELVETAS enhances water productivity through multi-stakeholder partnerships applying a push-pull-policy strategy.

Human rights to water and sanitation

HELVETAS focuses on ensuring access for the most vulnerable and enhancing participation, transparency and accountability. Public audits for example are systematically introduced in the projects.

Sustainable WASH service delivery

The HELVETAS strategy puts a service delivery approach in the centre considering the entire life-cycle of a service and promoting regular assessment of sustainability.

Behaviour change

HELVETAS promotes new approaches to behaviour change that better take into account psychological factors determining the adoption of new habits.

Increased policy influence

HELVETAS shares lessons learned based on its field experiences at local, national and global level as a way to contribute to policy development and hence to scaling up promising approaches.
