Switzerland has its 2025 finalist: Loris Affolter will represent Switzerland in Stockholm with a project on water and climate change in the Fribourg Prealps

We are delighted to announce Loris Affolter as the Swiss finalist for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2025. A student at Collège St-Michel / Kollegium St. Michael in Fribourg, Loris was selected during the 59th national science contest (Schweizer Jugend forscht | Science et jeunesse | Scienza e gioventù), held at ETH Zürich from 24–26 April 2025. His outstanding project, titled “Climate Change in the Fribourg Prealps: A Case Study in the Tissiniva Region,” earned him the distinction “excellent” and the honour of representing Switzerland at the international final in Stockholm.

His research explores the impacts of climate change on the fragile water systems of alpine pastures, using the Tissiniva region as a case study. By combining field observations, long-term meteorological data, and local testimonies, he highlights how earlier snowmelt, declining snowfall, and summer droughts are challenging traditional water supply in the Alps — with environmental, economic, and social implications.

Loris will represent Switzerland in Stockholm from 24 to 28 August 2025, during World Water Week. In preparation for the international competition, he will be coached by the Swiss Toilet Organisation and the Swiss Water Partnership.

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize | Switzerland is coordinated by SWP-Youth and supported by Xylem, Skat Foundation, Heusser Water Solutions AG, and seecon
