Meet the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) in Bern!
The SWP offers all interested organizations to exchange with the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) in Bern around the UN Water Theme 2019 “Leave no one Behind”.
4.5 billion people still lack access to adequate sanitation under the human rights principle, and millions lack menstrual hygiene and vital hand washing facilities. Diarrheal disease, largely caused by poor water, sanitation and hygiene, is a leading cause of malnutrition, stunting and preventable child mortality, claiming around 561,000 lives of children under five annually. In the developing world 90% of sewage is discharged untreated into rivers affecting the quality of water. Inadequate facilities also affect education and economic productivity and impact the dignity and personal safety of women and girls.
“Leave no one Behind” discusses the access to water and sanitation for all, which is reflected in the equality and non-discrimination principles of the human rights based approach (de Albuquerque, 2011) whereby the main objective is to reach everyone in the process of providing basic water, sanitation and hygiene services.
About the WSSCC
The Swiss Water Partnership would like to invite you to a meeting with the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC). Their mission is to “enable all people and especially women, girls and those living in vulnerable situations to practice the right to sanitation and hygiene across the course of their lives with dignity and safety”, contributing to the realization of SDG 6.2 but also other SDGs, particularly SDG 3, 4, 5. To achieve this goal, WSSCC works together with national government agencies, stakeholders and development partners, such as Wateraid, WASH United, UN-Women, UNICEF and other actors active in a variety of sectors, with a particular focus on Africa and South Asia.
Joint action is required to leave no one behind – the SWP invites you to join this informal meeting to learn about WSSCC’s activities and exchange on the topic of “Leave no one Behind”.
