CDE - Centre for Development and Environment

The Centre for Development and Environment is an Interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence of the University of Bern. CDE’s commitment is to advance innovative approaches in research and education that are appropriate for transforming highly complex sustainability problems into widely supported sustainable development pathways. For this purpose, CDE engages in social learning and co-production of knowledge in several world regions, invests in long-term partnerships, and connects local realities to global debates. CDE employs over 100 people from 17 disciplines, has activities with a particular focus on the Horn of Africa, East Africa, Southeast Asia, the Central Andes, as well as in Switzerland and Europe. CDE offers courses in sustainable development and global change at bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and postgraduate levels.

Thematic expertise

Integrated Water Resources Management

CDE and its partnership network in the Global South has a long-standing tradition in Integrated Water Resources Management with focus on evidence-informed decision-making though knowledge generation and sharing processes.

Water for people

CDE explores innovations for sustainable water and land governance for sustainable livelihoods in water scarce regions. Among others, it developed and applied approaches for identifying hotspots of water scarcity and conflicts in Eastern Africa and for establishing Water Resource Users Associations (WRUAs)

Water for food

Aiming to conserve and improve land resources, CDE investigates relevant influencing factors and creates tools and models for sustainable use of water and other land resources.
